Teenagers are under a tremendous amount of stress. School, sports, social media, and their activities have kids running ragged.
As stress builds, kids can start showing signs of burnout. If you are seeing these 5 signs in your teen it might be time to help them start managing their stress.
As kids enter the teen years their bodies need more sleep. However, when kids are under a lot of stress they might have difficulty sleeping. Whether its trouble falling asleep or difficulty staying asleep, both are signs of burnout.
Check in with your teen about how they are sleeping and whether they feel rested.
Another sign that your teen is burnt out is experiencing frequent illnesses. Things like persistent colds or minor illnesses can be an outward sign that they are feeling run down.
You might be hesitant to listen to their every complaint, it could be a sign of something more going on. Be sure to pay attention when they are not feeling like themselves.
Changes in mood
Every parent knows that the tween and teen years are full of mood changes and moodiness. What many parents don’t realize is that in some instances is this could be a sign of stress.
Irritability, melancholy and other changes in mood can be a sign that your teen is struggling to manage their stress. When they seem off, talk to them. Don’t avoid them just because you want to avoid a fight.
Headaches, stomach aches, and muscle pain are a few common complaints of kids who are under a lot of stress. Especially if your child doesn’t tend to be a complainer.
Keep in mind that these aches and pains are not “in their head,” but rather a physical manifestation of their stress.
Problems at school
One last sign that your teen is having difficulty dealing with stress is having problems at school. Maybe they are struggling to keep up with the workload. Or maybe they are having trouble with other students.
If they are voicing difficulty at school, listen and keep an eye out for warning signs of stress.
